Putting the right pictures in hospitals makes a real difference to staff and patients. There is plenty of research to show that improving the hospital environment helps patients' recovery rates and improves staff morale. But although the theory may be easy to understand, making it happen in a busy hospital is not always as easy as it looks.
Hospitals are full of different kinds of people with different priorities and different points of view. As specialists in the provision of art in healthcare environments we understand the special concerns of staff and patients, and believe that effective consultation, in which everyone feels involved and valued, is critical to the success of any project.
Hospitals are complex working buildings that present specific challenges: the art must work with
the design, or even improve it. Choice can be restricted by Health & Safety requirements, or by clinical needs; the finished artwork must be compatible with cleaning, maintenance and redecoration regimes, and resistant to vandalism and theft. We design our schemes to take account of these special circumstances at every stage from initial concept, consultation and commission through to installation and aftercare.
